Introduction

I have been interested in illustrators for a long time, especially when searching for images for A Wisconsin Town and Country Christmas. Hours were spent going through St. Nicholas Magazine, Scribners, Century, Leslie's Illustrated, and Harper's Weekly. The first time I encountered Howard Pyle, however, was when I bought a copy of Men of Iron at a souvenir shop in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, while on vacation there in the early '80s. It was an un-illustrated edition, but I liked his writing so well I started watching for his other books and that's when I discovered what a sensational illustrator he was. I read The Story of King Arthur and His Knights and then bought Otto of the Silver Hand, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Wonder Clock.

Pyle was a founder of the Brandywine school. His sister, Catherine, also joined him on some of his ventures, such as The Wonder Clock.

Later I became interested in illustrators of the American frontier, especially Eric Sloane and then Edwin Tunis. I plan to provide examples of their work as well.
