Canyonfire: Ten Crazies AfloatThis bit of nonsense was concocted by my then-wife, Susan, and me after spending a week on a rented houseboat with my parents John and Eleanor Lynch, brother Mike ("Michael" in this account) and his then-wife Wendy (lotsa then-wives in here), my brother Brian, my sister Kathy and her still-husband Mike, and my step daughter Jessica (still my step daughter). Mom and Dad rented the houseboat from an unsuspecting outfit in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and we converged on the dock on May 26, 1978. For Christmas that year, Susan and I decided to put this little handmade book together as a family Christmas present. I wrote the text, Susan did the illustrations from the slides I took. At the time, I was working at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Engineering Library, where they had both an electric typewriter and a new-fangled "Quick-Copy" machine (which we would now call a photocopier). I typed the text on half-sheets of paper, pasted in Susan's drawings, then duplicated the pages on the Quick-Copier. We copied the cover onto blue cover stock, wrapped it around the pages, and stapled it in three places. We gave the ten copies to the participants at Christmas, putting one copy aside for the "muffin in the oven," which the following May proved to be our son, Evan Patrick. Evan is now married (to Becci) and will turn 23 this May of 2002. They have conveniently produced one grandchild already, Christian, who was born the day before Evan's 21st birthday, and another is due this February, to be named Caston. Whew! Too much for me to digest. Oh, yeah, please make a few allowances for changing sensibilities and sensitivities. Thanks. Start with the cover, and then you can navigate through the rest by clicking the right arrow at the top of each page. Larry Lynch |
