Canyonfire Photo Gallery: Monterey Bay

On 14 January 2002, Doug Hamilton, Joe Petolino, and I drove to Pacific Grove (northwest of Monterey) and paddled our kayaks about 3 miles northwest to the mile buoy off Point Pinos hoping to see grey whales, No whales, but it was a beautiful fairly warm winter day. Sunny skies, temps in the 50s. Setting off from the protected beach at Lover's Point, we paddled through the most gorgeous turquoise water with magnificent kelp rising up from from the bottom in about 15' of clear water. We turned to the left and headed for the buoy about 3.2miles away, keeping well away from the huge breakers crashing on the rocky shore. After 2'-3'-swells, we got into enormous 10-foot swells. Amazingly, the kayaks simply rise right up over the tops and roller-coaster down into the troughs on the backsides. We returned to the Lover's Point beach, ate lunch, and then paddled the other direction past the Monterey Bay Aquarium to Fisherman's Wharf, about 4 miles each way. So we paddled a bit over 14 miles.
