Canyonfire: Farallones Whale Watch

A special thrill of the Bay Area is heading out under the Golden Gate for a whale-watching excursion to the Gulf of the Farallones and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuaries. The Farallon Islands are located about 26 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, and Cordell Bank, an entirely submerged mountain range teaming with sea life, is about the same distance northwest of the Farallones. On 22 October 2002 I was able to join the staff of the two marine sanctuaries and the Farallones Marine Sanctuary Association (FMSA) on an all-day boat trip to the Farallones in hopes of seeing a variety of birds, fish, and marine mammals.
