Andrea Bocelli
I have been a fan of Andrea Bocelli since I happened on his Romanza
CD when it first came out in the U.S. in '97. That CD had the extra
merit of reintroducing me to Sarah Brightman, with whom he sang
the sensational duet,"Time to Say Goodbye" (TTSG, in Italian:
Con te partiro). On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Nov. 8,
2003, I belatedly discovered Bocelli was appearing in concert at
the Oakland Arena the same evening at 8:00. He was to appear with
soprano Ana Maria Martínez, conductor Steven Mercurio, and
the Fresno Symphony. To save the TicketMaster add-on fee, which
would have made the $45 ticket $60, I decided to show up early at
the Arena in hopes of buying a ticket from somebody or at the ticket
window. Boarding BART at the 19th Street station in Oakland, I rode
the 15 minutes to the Coliseum station, where it was a short walk
past the Coliseum to the Arena. Sure enough I was able to buy a
$45 ticket in the upper level for $40. After wending my way to the
upper gallery, I took my seat. Soon the familiar sounds of the orchestra
tuning up filled the Arena...
